World Food Day was held at UVI's St. Croix Campus again this year. This year featured foods were the Sweet Potato, Coconut and Chickens.
As we arrived Steel Pan music played and a canned food drive for the hungry was underway.
The class on Sweet Potatoes was given in conjunction with Tuskeegee University's research group.
Lining up for samples after the Sweet Potato class. The offerings were Sweet Potato Leaves cooked as greens, Sweet Potato Cookie, Fried Sweet Potato varieties, Sweet Potato Bread and Sweet Potato Ducuna.
Then there were two Sweet Potato Drinks. Sweet and smooth. The two colors are due to the two different varieties used.
After the class was over and the samples were eaten we went back outside where there were also food vendors offering the usual island fare.
The next class was on Nutrition given by Dr. Letitia Henry. This class was followed by a class on poultry raising - in particular chickens - by Kofi Boateng.
Over in the Great Hall, the 4H Program youths were giving a talk and slide show on World Hunger and hunger right in our own backyard.
The stalls of the vegetable farmers was our next stop. Farm groups such as the VI Farmer's Cooperative and Farmers In Action were present with their beautiful produce.
Lots of Sugar Apples and Atemoya hybrids were on display.
Seedlings were offered for sale to would-be home gardeners. They got a jump on the season by using seedlings instead of planting seeds themselves.
A petting zoo was available for the youngsters to learn more about animals.
For most of the day, trolley tours were run travelling around the University grounds, over to the Farm Store and the experimental gardens.
