"Battle at the Beach" Martial Arts Tournament
Saturday, March 25th and 26th saw the International Open of the Martial Arts on St. Croix at the Good Hope School Gym. As close to the beach as could be. Here are some of the events that took place. We regret that we could not attend the entire event over the two days, but we hope you will enjoy the segments that we have composed here.
The first day began with sparring rounds for the younger set under 17. It continued with a demonstration and sparring for the 17 and up groups. These little competitors have what it takes.
Lining up for their turns at sparring.
And the fight was on in the 4-8 year old division.
And then it was time for the intermediate ages sparring sessions.
The second day's competition featured breaking, weapons, form and sparring exhibitions. Ending with a $1000 Grand Prize Black Belt Battle. The day began with a demonstration of Akido by a group from Puerto Rico.
The breaking exhibition began with the judges seated and ready to award points with critical eyes.
The exhibits continued with the over 17 individuals.
The next competitor at first sought to break three concrete bricks then decided on four!
No need for a saw. Hold the board with one hand and break it with the other!
The trophies awaiting the winners.
Behind the scenes. Preparation for the next segment of the tournament.
The intensity of waiting for their turns.
The weapons segment began with the white belts, green belts and blue belts. Weapons have to be presented for inspection before each contestant can begin.
The black belts were next.
The skill level and intensity of concentration and discipline grew greater with each contestant.
A blindfolded demonstration of skill.
More skilled sword work.
Presentation and execution.
All of the St. Croix Black Belts.
See you at next year's Battle on the Beach!
