Alexander Hamilton Jump-Up
The Christiansted Jump-Up in honor of Alexander Hamilton - yes, the one in the picture on the Ten Dollar United States bank note and the author of the U.S. Monetary System - took place on the night of July 15th.
The event featured musicians on key corners and vendors selling food and beer, while many stores stayed open until 10:00 PM for convenient shopping. The event is put on, regularly, by the Christiansted Hotel and Restaurant Association.
After parking, one walks to the cordoned-off six block area where the festivities are in full swing starting on Company Street. Vendors set up outside on the street while stores have their doors open, inviting buyers.
Of course, what would Jump-Up be without music to jump-up to? Some music was for lovers, some for dancers.
And then everybody came out to see the Mocko Jumbies walk and dance up and down the street. Wow!
There was fun on Company Street and then some of the crowd moved on to King Street where there was more food and music and stores to look into.
Food everywhere!
And the Mocko Jumbies danced to the Steel Pan Orchestra's music.
After watching the show, we slip down an alleyway to some more stores and action in King's Alley.
King's Street and King's Alley stores.
More Mocko Jumbie action and then we walk around the boardwalk to see the Tarpon fish.
After seeing the fish, we head up Queen Cross Street towards the perfume and jewelry corner. We encounter a few eager souls along the way.
Street scenes - the crowd moves to and fro.
Back in King's Alley a few lively souls were dancing to the music.
