This year HOVENSA which started out in 1966 as Hess Oil Virgin Islands Corporation turned 40 years old. To celebrate the company threw a Harbor Night Festival in Frederiksted along the newly completed waterfront for the island community.
The evening began with a concert on the Frederiksted Fort Beach as the sun descended past the horizon of the Caribbean Sea.
The concert went on until way after dark. The peacefulness of the Jazz music permeated the air.
Food and drink were on sale to satiate and mellow anyone who was in need of a little more than the music provided.
Wandering over to the town itself, we were in the midst of vendors setting up for the big night. The coconut man was on hand to dispense soothing coconut water to thirsty customers.
Early birds were getting in their shopping before the rush.
The young people of Future Business Leaders of America had a spot as well as restaurants along the way putting out their menus.
Vendors and handicrafts people of all types were set up for display.
The crowd grew denser as the night went on.
Shoppers congregated around booths manned with smiling proprietors, sampled many kinds of foods and listened to music as the evening wore on.
The fireworks went off at 8PM as scheduled, celebrating HOVENSA's 40th year on the island of St. Croix.
After the fireworks display, people walked onto the pier where the fountains were on for the occassion. Great fun for the little ones. Then it was time for the plaiting of the maypole.
Unfortunately, the maypole still remained unplaited after 45 minutes. There seemed to be a problem with the music. We did not capture images of the actual plaiting for this reason.
A few parting shots of the crowd and the street, 10:30 PM.
