The annual Christmas Boat Parade was originally scheduled for two weeks prior, however, there was rain and wind and the event was moved to the current date. This change of date proved to be perfect since the moon is nearly full tonight and it will make the night even more special.
Turning onto Stand Lane from King Street in Christiansted, we merge with the crowds and traffic heading toward the Boardwalk where the action will occur. Strand Street is empty now since everyone is getting into position to see the parade.
Looking back up the street. Then a welcome sign at the Hotel Caravelle in Danish, the old mother tongue.
A little food and fun before the event begins.
The musical backdrop for the carolling Gentlemen of Jones was provided by Quiet Fire.
The harbour at twilight.
And, as darkness fell, the boats moved into position - right on time - and began to float our way.
The parade looked beautiful with the moon shining above.
As HOVENSA's barrage of fireworks took flight, I was reminded of how the sea may have looked to John Paul Jones as it inspired him to write the Star Spangled Banner. The rockets' red glare...
With the boat show over, Strand Street, brightly lit, comes alive with people shopping for those last minute perfume and jewelry items. As we leave, we notice that cars are still streaming into town by way of the tiny European-designed main street, known to us as King Street. The night is still young.
